Supermarine Scimitar

The Supermarine Scimitar was Britain’s last fighter designed entirely by Supermarine—a powerful, twin-jet naval strike aircraft built for the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. First flown in 1956 and introduced in 1957, the Scimitar was developed from a series of experimental designs aimed at carrier operations, including undercarriage-less concepts for rubber deck landings. Ultimately, the production F.1 featured a conventional layout with swept wings, twin Rolls-Royce Avon engines, and a distinctive high-mounted tailplane.

This category showcases high-resolution prints of Scimitar aircraft in flight, on takeoff, and in preserved museum settings—captured by aviation photographer Stuart H. Bourne. Featured airframes include XD317, used by Airwork Services Ltd for Fleet Requirements Unit tasks, and others from HMS Ark Royal, Hermes, and Centaur. Each image is cataloged with verified serials, squadron history, and archival context.

Whether you're drawn to the Scimitar’s role in nuclear strike readiness, its early use in aerial refueling, or its place in British naval aviation history, these prints offer a visually rich tribute to one of the Royal Navy’s most distinctive Cold War jets.
