Panavia Tornado
The Panavia Tornado was Europe’s answer to multirole combat—developed jointly by the UK, Germany, and Italy to meet the demands of Cold War strike, reconnaissance, and air defense missions. First flown in 1974 and entering service in 1979, the Tornado featured twin Rolls-Royce RB199 turbofans, variable-sweep wings, and terrain-following radar for low-level penetration at high speed.
Three primary variants served across NATO and export forces:
