The Vickers Super VC10 was a British-built long-range jetliner designed for performance from short runways and hot climates—making it ideal for African routes. Airframe 9G-ABO was one of several VC10s operated by Ghana Airways, the national carrier of Ghana, during the 1970s and 1980s.

Originally built for BOAC as G-ARVC, this aircraft was later sold to Ghana Airways and re-registered as 9G-ABO. It served on intercontinental routes between Accra, London, and other major cities, offering passengers a quiet and comfortable ride thanks to its rear-mounted Rolls-Royce Conway engines.
