This archival photograph captures Avro Lancaster PA474 in flight, proudly displaying the City of Lincoln crest on its nose. Photographed by Stuart H Bourne, the image highlights the aircraft’s role as a living tribute to RAF Bomber Command and Lincolnshire’s aviation heritage.

Aircraft History

  • Serial: PA474
  • Type: Avro Lancaster B Mk I
  • Built: 1945 by Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd
  • Role: Strategic bomber, later photographic reconnaissance and research platform
  • Current Operator: Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (RAF Coningsby)

PA474 was originally built for the British Tiger Force, intended for operations in the Far East. With the war ending before deployment, it was repurposed for photographic reconnaissance duties in East and South Africa. Later, it served as a testbed for laminar flow wing trials at Cranfield before being restored to wartime configuration in the 1960s.

Since 1973, PA474 has flown with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The aircraft bears the City of Lincoln crest in honour of Lincolnshire’s legacy as “Bomber County,” where many RAF bomber stations were based during WWII. It remains one of only two airworthy Lancasters in the world.
