This archival image features the legendary de Havilland Mosquito RR299, a T Mk III variant built in 1945 as a dual-control trainer. Photographed by Stuart H. Bourne, the aircraft is shown lined up on a runway in full RAF display livery, complete with invasion stripes and roundels. Its twin Rolls-Royce Merlin engines and sleek wooden airframe are clearly visible, showcasing the Mosquito’s elegant yet formidable design.

RR299 served in the Middle East before returning to the UK, where it was restored to flying condition in the 1970s. Registered as G-ASKH, it became the world’s last airworthy Mosquito, operated by British Aerospace for RAF heritage displays. The aircraft flew at airshows across Europe, representing the speed and versatility that earned the Mosquito its nickname: the “Wooden Wonder.”

Tragically, RR299 was lost on 21 July 1996 during an airshow at Barton Aerodrome, Manchester. While performing a steep climb, the aircraft suffered a loss of power and crashed, killing both crew members. The accident marked the end of an era for one of WWII’s most celebrated aircraft.

This photo is ideal for collectors, historians, and enthusiasts seeking a rare glimpse of RR299 in motion. All metadata and historical context have been validated for archival-grade presentation.
