Airframe History – XR728

Built in the 1960s, XR728 served with several RAF squadrons and was among the final Lightning F6s to remain in frontline service. It was stationed at RAF Binbrook, the last operational base for the Lightning fleet. XR728 became well known for its participation in farewell flights and public displays leading up to the aircraft’s retirement in 1988. After decommissioning, XR728 was preserved and remains one of the most celebrated examples of the type.
