P-51D Mustang “Candyman” captured in flight, showcasing the sleek lines and iconic profile of North American’s legendary WWII escort fighter. Photographed by Stuart H. Bourne, this airframe features polished aluminum finish and racing-style markings from its postwar career.
Originally built as serial 44-73149, this Mustang served briefly with the USAAF before being transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1947 as RCAF 9568. After military retirement, it entered civilian ownership and was restored in California in the early 1960s. By 1974, it was racing under the name “Candyman” with red and white striping, flown by Jim Modes and Charlie Beck at Mojave air races.
Later acquired by The Fighter Collection and stationed at Duxford, UK, the aircraft wore dual nicknames “Moose” and “Candyman” in tribute to its wartime and racing heritage. It was registered as G-BTCD and flown at major European airshows before receiving a repaint in 361st Fighter Group colours under Mark Hanna’s ownership.
