This striking image features Supermarine Spitfire PL983 in mid-takeoff, wheels extended and just above the runway. The aircraft’s elliptical wings, RAF roundels, and camouflage paint scheme evoke its wartime heritage. Photographed by renowned aviation historian Stuart H. Bourne, the shot captures motion, power, and elegance in one frame.

PL983 is a Supermarine Spitfire PR Mk XI, a photo-reconnaissance variant built in 1944 and powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 70 engine. Unlike its combat-focused siblings, the PR Mk XI was unarmed and optimized for high-altitude, long-range missions—its primary defense being speed and altitude. This variant famously captured post-raid imagery of the Dambusters operation and served with No. 4 Squadron RAF before transferring to No. 2 Squadron in postwar Germany.

After military service, PL983 was used by the American Air Attaché, raced by ATA pilot Lettice Curtis, and later displayed at the Shuttleworth Collection. It was eventually restored to flying condition and is now operated by the Aircraft Restoration Company (ARCo) at Duxford Airfield, one of only two airworthy PR Mk XI Spitfires in existence.

This image preserves the legacy of a rare reconnaissance Spitfire that served across multiple roles and nations, making it a compelling addition for collectors and aviation historians alike.
