The North American P-51D Mustang is one of the most iconic fighter aircraft of World War II, renowned for its speed, range, and effectiveness in bomber escort missions over Europe. Introduced in 1944, the D variant featured a bubble canopy for improved visibility and a Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that gave it exceptional high-altitude performance.

This particular airframe, serial number 44-74506, was originally built for the U.S. Army Air Forces and later served in various roles before being restored for civilian display. Registered as F-AZJJ in France, it became a familiar sight at European airshows, flying under the colors of historic squadrons and captivating audiences with its unmistakable roar and polished aluminum finish.

F-AZJJ was operated for many years by the Amicale Jean-Baptiste Salis collection, contributing to the preservation of aviation heritage. It was deregistered in recent years, marking the end of its active flying career. Today, it stands as a testament to wartime engineering and the dedication of restorers who kept its legacy alive.

This archival photograph captures F-AZJJ in flight, showcasing its elegant lines and wartime livery. Printed on gloss archival paper, it’s a tribute to a machine that once ruled the skies and now rests in the annals of aviation history.
